Regina coeli

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

[C]-G2; [A]-C2; [T]-C3; [B]-F3. High clefs. Entire range, B♭-f’’. Initial pitches of chant (App. 3) for first two textual phrases permeate the imitative, polyphonic texture: “regina…” (mm. 1-11); and “quia…” (mm. 25-30). Two subsequent textual phrases also present melodic/rhythmic motives within an imitative texture: “resurrexit…” (mm. 47-56); and “ora…” mm. 64-77). “Alleluia” segments are extensively developed through imitative procedures. Although each “alleluia” section is independent, the first (mm. 16-26) and third (mm. 56-78) “alleluias” suggest a similar character with the presence of rapidly alternating duos (C/T & A/B) declaming “alleluia.” Rhythmic gestures primarily consist of minums and semiminums. Syllabic text setting with short melismas prevails. Final F, b♭ signature.

Description

Owen Rees suggests that Dom Bento may have composed this Regina coeli (Rees, 1995, p. 216).
