Five equal choirs. C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Chant (App. 3) motto associated with “regina coeli” assigned to C for Chrs. I, II and V and to T for Chrs. III and IV and T of Chr. IV of tutti. Zoilo’s setting of Regina coeli for 20 vv (5 choirs) appears to be an expanded version of RC224 though it is not clear which version was first composed. “Since both versions appear in I-Rn MS. 77-88, compiled by Zoilo himself, it seems reasonable to attribute both to him and to look on them as alternatives, depending on the forces available…. Only in the tutti sections is there any new music; otherwise, the choirs restate material from other choirs…. The large amount of musical repetition, combined with the fact that the choirs almost invariably follow each other in order from I to V, makes the piece rather monotonous, regretfully so in view of its uniqueness (the earliest surviving piece for 5 choirs). Although the choirs overlap to a considerable extent…the amount of tutti writing is small. All five are harmonically self-sufficient.”[1] Final F, b♭ signature.
