Regina celi

Polyphonic ensemble STB

C-C4; T-C4; B-F3. Entire range, F-f’. Relegated to the T[1] as a cantus firmus, chant (App. 3) including all melismas is stated primarily in semibreves; semibreve rests articulate textual phrases or specific words (“laetare,” “portare” and “resurrexit”). Outer voices (C and B) within defined ranges (C, c-f’ and B, F-b♭) and contrasting rhythmic gestures of minums and semiminums contrapuntally interact with occasional imitative passages but seldom infringe upon the cantus firmus. Declamatory text setting combines melismatic and syllabic styles. Final F, b♭ signature.

1. Though the T is notated once (“Questo canto firmo serve per doi.”) in 1559|25, it is valid for both de Rore’s and Adrian Willaert’s (RC218) three-voice settings of Regina celi. The compositions share a number of similarities: range, length, interaction of voices, mode, as well as lack of chant influence upon C and B.
