Partitions

Polyphonic ensemble TBBXX

Ct I-C3; Ct II-C3; T-C4; B I-C5; B II-F4. Voci pari. Entire range, F-g’. Ct voices share similar range. Assigned to B I as a cantus firmus in continuous semibreves, chant,[1] including all melismas, assumes a prominent role in the motet; thus, the final “alleluia” constitutes more than a fifth of the entire setting. Other voices demonstate minimal chant influence. Motivic material associated with each textual phrase permeates the imitative fabric. To introduce the final “alleluia” (m. 60), White presents motivic material coupled at the interval of a tenth between various voices (B II/C II and T/C I). Except for the imitative entries at the beginning of each textual phrase, the antiphon is full voiced. Text setting for Ct I, Ct II, T and B II is remarkably syllabic in contrast with melismatic cantus firmus. Final F, b♭ signature.

1. The editor of ECCM 29 has provided the antiphon cantus firmus in equal note values in B I using the version in Processionale ad usum insignis ac praeclarae ecclesiae Sarum, 1530 (Farnborough: Gregg, 1969).
