Regina coeli

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

S-C3; A-C4; T-F3; B-F4. Entire range, F-g’. Considerable voice crossing of two middle voices (A & T). Chant is relegated to the T as a cantus firmus; however, initial pitches of chant associated with “regina coeli” and “resurrexit…dixit” permeate the imitative, contrapuntal texture. Except for a brief reference to chant for the final “alleluia,” chant melismas are omitted. An ornamented “alleluia” segment that deviates from those of the Regina caeli in App. 3 follows each of the first three textual phrases.[1] Preceded by a semibreve rest in all voices, “ora…Deum,” the final textual phrase, begins in homorhythmic style. A syllabic text setting prevails in this succinct motet (44 mm.). Final F, b♭ signature.

1. Porta appears to have used a chant version for Regina caeli that includes identical melodic content for “alleluia” segments following the first three textual phrases in this setting but also in RC176 and RC177. The pitch content is comparable to the first melisma of “portare” as well as the “alleluia” that follows “resurrexit…dixit.”

The Trope:

Alle Domine nate matris Deus alme nobis confer praestaque vivere:
