Regina coeli

Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTBB

Two equal choirs. C-C1; A-C1; T-C4; B-F4. Within an imitative texture, C and A voices of Chrs. I and II share chant quotations, cast in semibreves (“regina”) or paraphrased chant (coeli’). Imitation at the distance of a semibreve defines the respective C and A voices, whereas imitation at the distance of two breves marks C/A voices between Chr. I and Chr. II (mm. 1-8). Replete with chant quotations and contrasting rhythmic gestures, choirs are harmonically dependent upon each other in this introductory passage. To emphasize the fourth line, “Ora..Deum,” chant in breves and semibreves permeates the imitative texture in both the initial statement (Chr. I, mm. 57-61) as well as the antiphonal response (mm. 60-6); a second statement defines “Ora” with breves in a quasi-homophonic/homorhythmic texture for both choirs (mm. 77-83). Identical “alleluia” segments (mm. 67-77 equal 83-92) follow the “Ora…” statements. Textual phrases are characterized by contrasts of texture, rhythmic gestures, triple mensuration, antiphonal techniques and repetition of textual/musical material; structural clarity defines the antiphon. Triple mensuration and homophonic/homorhythmic texture complement trochaic prosody of “resurrexit” (mm. 30-8 and 41-6) and the subsequent “alleluia” section (mm. 51-7). Antiphonal statements involve brief overlapping restatements of “laetare” (mm. 8-10) or, of entire textual phrases (e.g., “Quia…portare,” mm. 16-25). Tutti sections account for about a third of the antiphon and include the last three measures of the first and second “alleluia” sections, portions of “resurrexit…alleluia,” and the final five measures of the “alleluia” sections following “ora…Deum. A coda consisting of eight independent voices concludes the antiphon (mm. 92-7). Final F, b♭ signature.
