Partitions

Polyphonic ensemble SSAATB

C I-G2; C II-G2; A I-C1; A II-C2; T-C4; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, G-f’’. A Spanish Regina caeli chant[1] primarily in semibreves permeates the imitative, contrapuntal texture. The melodic material for textual phrase “ora…Deum” differs from the cited Spanish version but may reflect a local tradition. The antiphon begins with chant (C I) and a countersubject (A I) that also permeates the texture for the first textual phrase. Except for the first “alleluia,” new material defines the subsequent “alleluia” sections; the final “alleluia” in triple mensuration intensifies the drive to the final cadence. A declamatory text setting prevails. Final g, b♭ signature; e♭ included where necessary with additional editorial e flats.

1. The Spanish version in mode 1 bears little resemblance to the Roman version. That the melody may have remained relatively unchanged during the sixteenth century is validated by the Liber Processionarius (Seville, 1526) f. 23v reproduced in Freis, 453 and the Antiphonarium de sanctis (Saragossa, 1596) 239-40 in O’Connor, 80.

Regina caeli laetare, alleluia;
Quia quem meruisti portare, alleluia,
Resurrexit, sicut dixit, alleluia,
Ora pro nobis Deum, alleluia.
