Partitions

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-G2; A I-C2; T-C3; B-F3. Paraphrased chant (App. 3) is assigned to the canonic voices, C and A II, at the interval of the lower fifth and distance of two breves. Normally, a quoted chant melody in the dux and comes of an antiphon remains within the pitch range of its model even when transposed to the usual intervals of the lower fourth or upper fifth. To the contrary, Morales states the first textual phrase at intervals of the upper twelfth (dux) and octave (comes) and three subsequent phrases, respectively, at the upper octave and fourth, the upper ninth and fifth and the upper octave and fourth. Transposing the chant to intervals less than a twelfth the composer avoids exceeding the pitch f’’ in the C. Anticipatory statements (B, T and A I) precede the canon for the first textual phrase “regina caeli;” thereafter, occasional evidence of chant appears in non-canonic voices. Declamatory text setting in syllabic style prevails. Final F, b♭ signature.
