Regina coeli

Polyphonic ensemble SAATB

[S]-C1; [A I]-C3; [A II]-C3; [T]-C4; [B]-F4. Initial pitches of chant (App. 3) concurrent with the four textual phrases (“regina celi,” “quia quem,” “resurrexit” and “ora pro nobis”), as well as specific words (e.g., “sicut dixit”), and emphasized through presence of breves and semibreves, permeate the imitative texture. Not only are principal entrances (S, A II, and T) set apart for “regina celi” with long-note values but a countersubject (A I and B) with a variety of rhythmic gestures begins with initial pitches of “regina.” “Alleluia” segments that follow the first three textual phrases consist of similar material unrelated to chant and primarily in minums and semiminums (mm. 12-7, 26-30, and 43-8). In triple mensuration, the concluding “alleluia” section suggests antiphony between S and A I and the three lower voices in homophony. Except for melismas in the three “alleluia” sections, a syllabic style prevails. Final F; b♭ signature.
