S I-C1; S II-C1; Ct-C3, T-C4; B II-F4, B I-F3. Chant (App. 3), slightly embellished, serves as the subject of a canon between S I and S II. The enigmatic canonic directive “Sans souspirer ne chanter poinctz” (“Do not sing without breathing”) implies “Delete the minum rests and do not recognize dots.” Although the dux in S I starts two breves ahead of the comes (S II) at the lower fourth, the latter overtakes the dux in m. 23 since all minum rests and dots have been dismissed. For the 2.p. S II carries the dux followed by the comes (S I) at the distance of two and the interval of the upper fourth and again overtakes the comes in m. 55.[1] Chant permeates the lower voices at the beginning of textual phrases. For the most part rhythmic gestures of the canonic voices parallel those in the lower voices except for the text “ora pro nobis Deum” where the canon has longer note values. Final F, b♭ signature.
