Partitions

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-C4. High clefs. Entire range, c-a’’. Chant, in semibreves, serves as cantus firmus (B) throughout; except for insertion of passing tones the plainsong duplicates App. 3. Initial pitches of plainsong introduce the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th verses as well as the “alleluia” segments in three upper voices. Six additional measures (mm. 78-83) emphasis cadential movement to F. Full voice texture with only occasional minum or semiminum rests defines the antiphon. To complement the plainsong of the first two alleluia sections (mm. 11-16 and 35-9), similar material appears in the upper voices; on the other hand, repetition of chant in the final “alleluia” is duplicated in the three upper voices (mm. 58-66=66-75). Rhythmic gestures primarily include minums, semiminums and fusae. Text setting combines syllabic and melismatic styles. Final F, b♭ signature.[1]

1. Klingenstein’s Ave regina coelorum (AC064), also with plainsong assigned to B, exhibits similar style features.
