Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTBB

C I-C1; C II-C1; A I-C3; A II-C3; T I-C4; T II-C4; B I-F4; B II-F4. Chant (App, 3) permeates an imitative, contrapuntal texture. Chant motives attached to specific textual passages and set apart as semibreves appear in various voices; e.g., within the first 12 bars a “regina caeli” motive is stated five times (T I, C I, T II, C II, and A II) simultaneously complemented by rising disjunct counterpuntal lines that span an octave in contrast to the chant motive span of a third. An 8-voice motet with four upper voices (C I and II, A I and II) and four lower voices (T I and II, B I and II) would usually be treated antiphonally; only for the final “alleluia” section (mm. 90-104) does Guerrero allude to antiphony that involves contrasting but overlapping voice groupings (e.g., C I, A I, T I, B I vs. C I, A I, A II, T II, B II). Approximately a third of the motet is fully voiced; various voice groupings provide variety. Declamatory text setting prevails. Final F, b♭ signature.
