Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTBB

Two equal choirs. C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4, Bc-F4. Bc is basically a basso seguente and not essential to the performance of the music. Chant quotations (App. 3) in semibreves permeate the imitative texture of lines 1 (“regina caeli,” mm. 1-7), 2 (“quia quem,” mm. 13-17) and 4 (“ora pro nobis Deum,” mm. 54-65); the beginning of “quia quem” involves paired imitation (C/A & T/B with plainsong in the upper voices. Textual phrases and specific words (e.g., “alleluia”) are delineated through antiphonal techniques, contrasting texture, rhythmic gestures and mensuration. Antiphonal procedures include overlapping varied responses (e.g., “quia quem…,” mm. 13-28), interjections (“regina caeli,” Chr. II mm. 6-8), as well as alternating statements of “alleluia” (mm. 45-50. Full voice texture only characterizes the concluding “alleluia” statements (mm. 75-80). Triple mensuration concurrent with a homorhythmic texture and primarily syllabic text setting defines “Resurrexit…alleluia” (mm. 35-53), and the final “alleluia” (mm. 65-80). Each choir is harmonically independent. Final F, b♭ signature.
