Ti-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. A Spanish Regina caeli chant[1] prominently accompanies textual phrases “regina…alleluia” and “resurrexit…alleluia” where it permeates the imitative, contrapuntal texture. Textual phrases are delineated by presence of chant, inclusion of new motivic material (“quia…portare” and “ora…alleluia”) and cadences. A four-note motive attached to “alleluia” (mm. 30-35) forms the core of a descending sequential pattern in B. Declamatory text setting prevails. Final d.

1. The Spanish version in mode 1 bears little resemblance to the Roman version. That the melody may have remained relatively unchanged during the sixteenth century is validated by the Liber Processionarius (Seville, 1526) f. 23v reproduced in Freis, 453 and the Antiphonarium de sanctis (Saragossa, 1596) 239-40 in O’Connor, 80.
