Regina coeli

Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTBB

Two equal choirs. C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Entire range, F-d’’. Chant (App. 3) introduces C (“regina coeli,” mm. 1-4) cast in semibreves and supported by an imitative texture based upon a countersubject; an additional chant quotation is attached to “quia” (B, mm. 22-3). Textual phrases and specific words are delinated through a variety of antiphonal treatments and contrasts of texture. The final word (“letare”) of line 1 is scored for 8 voices within an imitative fabric (mm. 8-13); the following “alleluia” (mm. 12-9) consists of varied antiphonal responses. A homorhythmic texture defines line 2 (“quia…portare,” mm. 20-6) followed by an “alleluia” segment (mm. 26-32) of independent voices. Both the third line, “resurrexit,” (mm. 33-7) and the final “alleluia” (mm. 53-9) consist of 8 independent voices within a dense contrapuntal texture; on the other hand, the intervening fourth line, “ora pro nobis,” contrasts with overlapping antiphonal responses of homorhythmic gestures. A syllabic text setting prevails with brief melismas relegated to “alleluia” segments. Final F, b♭ signature.
