Regina coeli

Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTBB

Two contrasting choirs. Chr. I: C-C3; A-C4; T-C4; B-F4. Range, F-g’. Chr. II: C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Range, F-d’’. Plainsong motive (App. 3) associated with “regina coeli” permeates the imitative texture of the initial textural phrase; plainsong in T introduces the second textual phrase, “quia que meruisti.” Textual phrases are diffentiated though antiphonal treatment, texture, harmonic goals, rhythmic gestures and presence of chant. Except for imitative character of initial phrase, “Regina…letare,” the remainder of the antiphon reflects homophony.
Varied antiphonal techniques characterize the four textual statements:

“Regina…” Chr. I (1-9)
“quia…meruisti” Chr. II (15-8); “portare” Chrs. I and II (18-21)
“resurrexit…” Chrs. I and II (26-30)
“ora…” tutti (36-8); Chr. II (39-41); Chr. I (41-4)

“Alleluia” segments (mm. 9-15, 22-6, 31-5, 45-52), in triple mensuration with succinct overlapping antiphonal statements suggest the “refrain” character of the musical material; three subsequent “alleluias” abbreviate or expand upon the initial “alleluia.” A two-measure tutti (“alleluia” mm. 51-3) concludes the antiphon. Syllabic text setting prevails. F final, b♭ signature.
