[1] Regina caeli

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-C1; A-C2; T-C3; B-C4. Chant (App. 3) serves as a cantus firmus (B) in semibreves (three semibreve rests articulate the plainchant text) in both partes and exerts considerable influence upon the structure of the antiphon. The Regina coeli motive (C) anticipates the entry of the cantus firmus in 1.p., and the upper three voice in imitation (A, C, T, mm. 30-3) introduce the cantus firmus in 2.p. Additional chant quotations in upper voices appear at the beginning of lines 2 and 3, and the final “alleluia.” Whereas plainsong is abbreviated for “laetare” and “portare,” the double final “alleluia” melisma is retained in the cantus firmus; the entire texture is restated (mm. 47-54=54-61). A texture of individual voices prevails. Final F, b♭ signature.
