Partitions

[1] Ave regina celorum

Polyphonic ensemble STX

[C]-C1; T-F3; Ct-F4. Chant (App.2) appears intact at the beginning of each textual phrase and usually in long note values: longae, breves, and even duplex longae (“gaude”); thereafter, chant is treated with freedom as the line unfolds. Within an imitative, contrapuntal texture, anticipatory entrances of the chant occur in other voices and freely composed material may also be treated imitatively (“gaude” in Ct and C). Of interest is the ascending sequential passage (mm. 38-44). “Vale valde decora” in triple mensuration contrasts with surrounding material. Text underlay of the Pre-Tridentine text occurs only in the T provided with a highly melismatic setting. Final F, though b♭ is not included in manuscript, it is obligatory.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.

***

Et pro nobis Christum exora.
