Partitions

[1] Ave regina celorum

Polyphonic ensemble STX

S-C1; T-C2; Ct-F3. Chant (App.2) as breves or sembreves at the beginning of textual phrases continues as a paraphrase in S of partes 1, 3, and 4, and T of pars 2. Anticipatory entrances of chant for “ave regina” (mm. 1-10) and “salve” (mm. 32-36) offer examples of imitation, a limited feature of the antiphon. Textual phrases are clearly defined; each section concludes on the final F capped by a corona. Passages in parallel thirds characterize the setting; rising sequence (mm. 110-16) in thirds between T and Ct prepares the final cadence. A melismatic setting of Pre-Tridentine text prevails. Final F, b♭ signature.

[2] Salve radix

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.

***

Pre-Tridentine version:

Ave regina coelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum,
Salve radix sancta
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa:
Vale, valde decora,
Et pro nobis semper Christum exora.
Et pro nobis Christum exora.

***

Tridentine version:

Ave regina coelorum
Ave, domina angelorum,
Salve radix, salve porta
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:
