Partitions

Polyphonic ensemble SATBXX

C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; Q-C4; B-F4; Bc C-4 and F4. Essentially a basso seguente, the Bc published in 1598, appeared two years after V 1058. No evidence of chant. Within a dense texture that spans a range between homophony to the presence of independent voices, this concise setting (20 mm.) consists primarily of minums, semiminums and dotted rhythmic gestures; synchronicity of rhythm and text predominates. Except for the introductory textual phrase, “Ave…angelorum” for C, A, and Q, the remainder of the antiphon is fully voiced. A predominantly syllabic style defines a declamatory setting of the Pre-Tridentine text. To complement trochaic prosody, “gaude gloriosa,” notated as M, Sm, M, Sm, M, M interprets the inherent textual prosody (long-short) within duple mensuration and homorhythmic style (mm. 22-4).[1] Final F, b♭ signature.

1. The same principle is applied to “gaude gloriosa” in Ave regina caelorum settings by Balbi (AC015), Cartari (AC026) and Palestrina (AC098).

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
