Ave regina coelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATTB

[S]-C1; [A]-C3; [T I]-C4; [T II]-C4; [B]-F4. No evidence of chant. Vecchi clarifies the structure in this short piece (25 mm.) through contrasting melodic and rhythmic materials and antiphonal effects; the final section constitutes a varied repetition of the previous 6 mm. (“vale…exora”). “Ave…angelorum” and “vale…decora” exhibit alternation between high and low voices with rhythmic gestures involving minums, semiminums and fusae, whereas “salve…orta” and “et pro…decora” are for tutti in homorhythmic texture with longer note values (primarily semibreves and minums).[1] Only “gaude gloriosa” exhibits imitative and melismatic styles. A declamatory setting of the Pre-Tridentine text is primarily in syllabic style. Final F, b♭ signature.

1. Similar stylistic features appear in an anonymous setting of Alma redemptoris mater, AR117.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
