Ave regina coelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTBB

Two equal choirs: C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Chant (App. 2) is limited to the first two textual phrases, “ave regina…orta” where it appears most prominently in the C, A and B within an imitative, contrapuntal texture. Whereas entire textual phrases or segments of phrases are relegated to respective choirs for the first two phrases, the third phrase, “gaude…speciosa” presents a marked contrast with its homorhythmic structure and overlapping antiphonal responses of single words (“gaude”) or short phrases (“gaude gloriosa” and “super omnes speciosa”). For “vale…exora” the opening polyphonic style returns but without reference to the chant melody. With slight alterations, the textual/musical material for “gaude…exora” is restated (mm. 46-68 equal mm. 69-88). The motet concludes with a coda involving both choirs (”semper…exora,” mm. 87-91). The Pre-Tridentine text is set in declamatory style. Final F, b♭ signature.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
