Partitions

Polyphonic ensemble SATBXXXX

Two contrasting choirs. Chr. I, C-CI; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Entire range, F-d’’. Chr. II, O-C2; Q[I]-C3; Q[II]-C4; Sp-F4. Entire range, F-b♭’. Textual phrases are differentiated through antiphonal treatment, texture and variation techniques. Unique to “Ave…coelorum” is the presence of chant (App. 2) within an imitative texture (mm. 1-9); plainsong appears in C of Chr. I (mm. 1-5) supported by a imitative statements of a countersubject (A & T, mm. 1-4). In the antiphonal response of Chr. II, the countersubject appears in the two upper voices and the chant in the two lower voices (mm. 6-8). Chr. I introduces textual phrases followed by a varied response of Chr. II (e.g., the antiphonal response of “salve radix” has all voices a third lower (mm. 16-20), whereas the response for “vale…decora” rearranges the voice parts). Tutti sections include “ex qua…orto” (22-6), “super…speciosa”[1] (mm. 32-35) and the concluding statement of “et pro…exora” (mm. 42-48). Reflecting the prevailing homorhythmic texture, the Pre-Tridentine text is appropriately included only in the upper voice of each choir. Final G.

1. Tutti segments devoted to textual phrases “ex qua…orto” and “super…speciosa” are uncommon though the plainchant for these passages are identical.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
