[1] Ave regina caelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SSTX

Tr I-C1; Tr II-C1; Ct-C3; T-C3. No evidence of chant. The setting includes two texted, rhythmically, active, upper voices within the range c’-d’’ supported by two non-texted (instrumental?) voices within the range f-g’ primarily in longer note values. Brief imitative passages occur between the upper voices at “domina,” “gloriosa” and “et pro nobis.” To clarify structure, some textual phrases are introduced by only the upper voices (“ave regina,” “salve” and “vale valde”); additionally, “vale…exora” in contrasting compound duple mensuration contains several hemiola passages. The Pre-Tridentine text is set in melismatic style; “ave” replaces “gaude.” Final F, b♭ signature for two lower voices.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.

***

Pre-Tridentine version:

Ave regina coelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum,
Salve radix sancta
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa:
Vale, valde decora,
Et pro nobis semper Christum exora.
Et pro nobis Christum exora.

Ave regina coelorum
Ave, domina angelorum,
