Ave regina coelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATBXX

C-C1; Sx-C1; A-C3; Q-C4; T-F3; B-F4. Entire range, F-c’’. Chant (App. 2) in breves and semibreves serves as a cantus firmus in T where it is segmented according to specific words or textual phrases;[1] the melody does not influence other voices within the imitative, polyphonic dense texture. Rhythmic gestures consisting of minums and semiminums sharply contrast with the cantus firmus. The initial melodic gesture in B (F, A, B) and imitated in Sx (c, e, f♯) characterizes the Lydian mode. The Pre-Tridentine text is presented is declamatory style. Final F, b♭ signature.

1. An identical cantus firmus is presented in BI of AC108.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.

***
