Ave regina celorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATBXX

C-G2; Q-C1; A-C2; T-C3; B-C4; Bc-C4. High clefs. Entire range, c-g’’. A Bc (basso seguente) was added in the 2nd edition (P 1974). To complement the antiphon chant, both “ave” exclamations include the plainsong that permeates the texture; thereafter, only “salve” reflects the chant. Textual phrases are characterized by particular musical styles: from the beginning to “gaude…gloriosa” Philips primarily employs an imitative, contrapuntal texture comprised of breves, semibreves and minums in all voices. “Gaude” introduces a contrasting homorhythmic texture for 3 or 4 vv in dotted minums, minums and semiminums. With the repetition of “super…speciosa” the rhythmic gestures include groups of 4 and 8 semiminums. “O valde decora” in homophonic style brings a return to the opening style. Except for melismas that accompany the salutations “ave,” the text generally reflects declamatory style. Final C.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
