Ave regina celorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATTB

[S]-C1; [A]-C3; [TI]-C4; [TII]-C4; [B]-F4. No evidence of chant. Textual phrases are clearly defined through structural devices: repetition of text with new material, silence and cadences. “Ave” (mm. 1-5) serves as a prelude[1] followed by statements of “regina coelorum,” first by four lower voices (mm. 6-8) and after a semibreve rest, a full voice setting (mm. 9-12) all in homophonic style. Text repetition also emphasizes “ex qua…orta (mm. 17-26) and “et pro nobis semper” (mm. 39-47). Homophony primarily defines the antiphon with limited independence of voices and static melodic material. Syllabic style setting of Pre-Tridentine text prevails. Scribal errors create occasional dissonances. Final F; b♭ signature.

1. Papini’s Ave regina celorum AC101 as well the Anonymous setting AC147 also has a prelude; these antiphons are included in BolC Q31.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
