Ave regina celorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

[S]-G2; [A]-G2; [T]-C2; [B]-C3. High clefs. Entire range, f-f’’; the two upper voices (S and A) have the same range (d’-f’’). Chant serves as a cantus firmus (T) but also introduces textual phrases where it permeates the imitative texture. The cantus firmus either accommodates the rhythmic gestures of the surrounding voices (e.g., “Ave regina celorum” and “radix sancta”) or, more frequently, is presented in semibreves (“ave domina angelorum,” “salve,” “ex qua mundo,” lux est orta,” “gloriosa,” “super omnes speciosa” and “vale”). The full texture of the opening phrase, “Ave…celorum” as well as “super omnes speciosa” are saturated with plainsong. A brief paired-imitation passage (S/A and T/B, mm. 71-3) prepares the final statement, “et pro nobis…” A combination of syllabic and melismatic styles defines the text setting. Final F, b♭ signature.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
