Ave regina caelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

S-G2; A-C3; T-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, B-g’’. The S and T are prime carriers of chant (App. 2) within an imitative, contrapuntal texture; however, other voices are also invested with chant as well as new material. Paired imitation introduces the initial “ave” (mm. 1-9). Textual phrases are defined by cadences, number of voices and mensural contrasts. The final textual phrase “vale…exora,” cast in triple mensuration (mm. 72-105), is followed by a 10-measure “coda” in duple mensuration with two statements of “exora” and an “Amen.” Genet combines melismatic and syllabic styles in setting of Pre-Tridentine text. Final C.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.

***

Et pro nobis Christum exora.
