Partitions

Ave regina coelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SSATB

S I-C1; S II-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. A likely chant source for Esquivel’s setting is the Heronymite Processional[1] of 1569 though the setting also exhibits new material (e.g., “ave domina angelorum”) all of which permeate an imitative, contrapuntal texture. Additionally, the antiphon exhibits an indebtedness to Juan Navara, reputedly Esquivel’s teacher, whose Ave regina coelorum (AC079) shares the same chant source; specific passages reveal marked similarities between the two 5 vv settings (“ave regina coelorum,” “salve radix” and “vale.”[2] Whereas Navarro used the Pre-Tridentine text, Esquivel’s declamatory setting is of the Tridentine version. Final F, b♭ signature.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
