Ave regina coelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATTB

[S]-C1; [A]-C3; [TI]-C4; [TII]-C4; [B]-F4. Chant introduces most textual phrases to permeate the imitative texture; however, Cavaccio has included the initial four pitches of Alma redemptoris mater for the opening textual phrase (A, B, TI and S). Ave regina coelorum plainsong, cast primarily in semibreves, also serves as a cantus firmus for specific textual phrases: “Ave regina coelorum,” (TII, mm. 2-12); “salve” (TI, mm. 18-23); and “gaude gloriosa” (TII, mm. 32-6). Short passages for 3 or 4 voices contrast with the full voice texture. Except for melismas associated with “coelorum” (A), “angelorum” (S, A and TII), “sancta” (A and B), “gloriosa” (S and A), and “vale” (B, S and A), a syllabic text setting in declamatory style prevails. Final F; b♭ signature.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
