Three contrasting choirs. Choir I: C-G2; A-C1; T-C2; B-C3. Range, e-a’’. Choir II: C-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-C4. Range, c-g’’. Choir III: Q-C2; A-C3; T-C3; B-F3. Range, G-d’’. High clefs. The basso per l’organo duplicates the lowest voice.[1] Bassano employs contrasting sonorities; choirs are used independently, coupled together (only Chrs. II and III), and as tutti. No evidence of chant. Silence occurs only between “ave regina” and “ave domina;” overlapping of phrases prevails. Triple mensuration for “gaude gloriosa”[2] contrasts with surrounding material. Homophonic texture and syllabic text setting predominate; only “super omnes speciosa” (mm. 39-43) exhibits a contrapuntal texture. Final C.

1. “It is possible that the basso per l’organo might have been published in the early seventeenth century and supplied with a date close to the year when the vocal part-books first appeared in print.” Richard Charteris, Giovanni Bassano, Opera omnia. CMM 101. Vol. 1, p. XIV. (Middleton, WI: AIM, 1999).

2. To emphasize textual/musical structure and complement trochaic prosody of “gaude…speciosa,” triple mensuration and homophony defines Ave regina caelorum settings by G. Aichinger (AC002 & AC003), F. Anerio (AC006), G. Bassano (AC016 & AC017), A. Gabrieli (AC047), R. de Lassus (AC072), G. de Macque (AC076), G. P. Palestrina (AC099), P. Philip (AC106), E. Saÿve (AC121), F. Soriano (AC123), F. Stivori (AC126), T. Victoria (AC136), Anon (AC170), Anon (AC184) and F. Anerio (AC232).

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.

***
