Ave regina caelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-C4. High clefs. Entire range, c-g’’. Textual phrases are differentiated through chant quotations (App. 2) and contrasts of mensuration and texture. Motives derived from chant (A/T, mm. 1-3) permeate imitative polyphonic texture (mm. 3-10). Primarily cast as breves (A, C and B, mm. 32-9), the four chant pitches associated with “gaude,” support a texture comprised of semiminums (C, T, B, mm. 32-5; A & B, mm. 37-8) to begin the third textual phrase that coincides with a return to duple mensuration; the previous nine-measure segment in triple mensuration and homorhythmic texture includes the text (“salve…orta”) of the second textual phrase. With the exception of two brief three-voice segments (“ave…angelorum,” A, T, B, mm. 19-22 and “super…speciosa,” C, A, T, mm. 42-4), a full voice texture prevails. Syllabic style, with occasional melismas (e.g., “ave,” “caelorum” and “gaude.” Final, C.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
