Partitions

Polyphonic ensemble SATTB

[S]-C1; [A]-C2; [T I]-C3; [T II]-C4; [B]-F3. No evidence of chant. Contrapuntal texture with rhythmic imitation prevails; however, the opening of the first and third textual phrases is delineated by homorhythmic style. The text is set in declamatory style, primarily syllabic with brief melismas. Rhythmic values consist of semiminims, fusae, and semifusae; syncopated gestures are common. Harmonic structure points to F but the setting concludes with an a-minor chord, b♭ signature.[1]

1. Similar stylistic features occur in Orfeo Vecchi’s Ave regina caelorum, AC129.

Alma redemptoris mater, quae pervia caeli porta manes
Et stella maris, succurre cadenti surgere qui curat populo:
Tu quae genuisti, natura mirante, tuum sanctum genitorem:
Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore sumens illud, Ave, peccatorum miserere.
