Two equal choirs. C-G2; A-C1; T-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, F-g’’. In several ways this setting is related to AR103 which may have been the model for AR104: use of identical initial motives for comparable textural phrases, cantus firmus treatment in C for “sumens illud ave,” similar rhythmic gestures for “virgo prius” all within a fourfold structure. The primary antiphonal technique involves alternation of identical textual and musical materials: “quae pervia coeli,” “porta manes,” “et stella maris,” “succurre cadenti” (3 statements), “tuum sanctum genitorum,” “ac posterius” and “peccatorum miserere” that accounts for more than 40 per cent of the setting. The 2.p. dramatically opens with antiphonal responses of “tu” followed by a tutti for “tu quae genuisti.” Victoria combines syllabic and melismatic styles in declamatory text setting. In V1435 (1600) an organ part was added to duplicate Choir I except for measures 34-36 where the organ carries the B of Choir II since the B in Choir I is silent.[1] Final F, b♭ signature.

Victoria “was the first polyphonic composer to use the organ” in his choral works; in eight works the organ was part of the original conception whereas in sixteen other works the organ was added when they were republished in 1600.
