Partitions

Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTBBXX

Two equal choirs. C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4; Bc-C3 & F4. The Bc, a basso seguente, is not essential to a performance of the antiphon. Entire range, F-e’’. No evidence of chant. Text is delineated through antiphonal treatment and contrasting rhythmic gestures. An imitative texture introduces “Alma…mater” (Chr. I, mm. 1-8) followed by “ripieno” (noted in Bc) with same text (mm. 9-13). There follows alternation of choirs for textual phrases: “que pervia celi” (Chr. II, mm. 13-5; “porta…manis”; Chr. I with varied statement in Chr. II, mm. 16-20; “succure cadenti” (tutti, mm. 20-22). The text “surgere populo” is presented in triple mensuration with duplicate material for Chrs. I and II, with designation F. (Fora.)[1] in Bc. A marked contrast characterizes “tu que genuisti…illud ave” (mm. 30-14): eight overlapping antiphonal responses consisting of rhythmic/melodic motives are constructed of minums and semiminums. The antiphon concludes (“peccatorum miserere”) with “ripieno” for eight independent voices (mm. 44-51). A syllabic text setting prevails. Final C.

1. F. or Fora. (forastieri), indicated in Bc, refers to outside or ”foreign,” paid musicians (i.e., musicians not part of the musical establishment of the specific church or cathedral) who performed the solo passages (concertino). The terminology was common in Northern Italy in the late 16th century and onward. Frederick Hammond, “Performance in San Marco: A Picture and Two Puzzles,” Early Music, No. 2, 2012, p. 261.

Et stella maris, succurre cadenti surgere qui curat populo:
