Partitions

Polyphonic ensemble SATBXX

C-G2; A-C2; T-C3; Q-C3; B-C4; Bc-F4 and C4.[1] High clefs. Entire range, c-f’’. Essentially a basso seguente, the Bc is transposed a fourth lower than the B, indicative of chiavette, characterized by “high clefs” used in this setting.[2] No evidence of chant. Within a dense texture that spans a range between homophony to the presence of independent voices, this concise setting (20 mm.) consists primarily of minums, semiminums and dotted rhythmic gestures; synchronicity of rhythm and text predominates. Except for a minum rest that separates the two verses, a continuous full-voice texture prevails. Declamatory text setting defined by syllabic style. Final F, bs signature.

1. V 1059 p. 34 published in 1598 two years after V 1058.

2. G. Aichinger’s Salve regina notated with high clefs has a basso seguente transposed a fifth lower than the B (SR006).

Alma redemptoris mater, quae pervia caeli porta manes
Et stella maris, succurre cadenti surgere qui curat populo:
Tu quae genuisti, natura mirante, tuum sanctum genitorem:
Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore sumens illud, Ave, peccatorum miserere.
