Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTBBXX

Two equal choirs. S-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-F3; Bc-F3. High clefs. Entire range, G-a’’. A Bc including the lowest B voice and the highest C voice was added in the second edition, (P 1976). Chant (App. 1) is evident only for the initial pitches of “alma” in Ch I and “quae pervia caeli” in Ch II where in both instances it permeates the texture. Choirs alternate textual phrases or restate phrases or partial phrases with a variety of interrelationships, each choir being harmonically independent. Phillips integrates imitative contrapuntal and homorhythmic textures complemented by a primarily declamatory text with a few melismas. Final F, b♭ signature.
