Alma redemptoris mater

Polyphonic ensemble SATBXX

C-G2; Q-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-F3; Bc-F3. High clefs. Entire range, A-g’’. A Bc (basso seguente) was added in the 2nd edition, (P 1974). Paraphrased chant (App. 1) for initial pitches of a few textual phrases (“alma,” “tu quae,” “virgo” and “peccatorum”) appears within a primarily imitative contrapuntal fabric. “Succurre cadenti surgere qui curat populo” exhibits homorhythmic and syllabic styles as well as contrasting triple mensuration. A variety of rhythmic gestures enhance the declamatory text setting. Occasional presence of cross relations: e and e♭, c and c♯. Final F, b♭ signature.
