Alma redemptoris mater

Polyphonic ensemble SSATTB

C I-G2; C II-G2; A-C2; T I-C3; T II-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, A-g’’. No evidence of chant. The respective C and T voices share the same range with considerable voice interchange within a fusion of imitative and homorhythmic styles. Textual phrases are defined by contrasting voice groupings. Only half of the setting is for full choir; the remainder is set for two to four voices. Almost a third of the piece is devoted to the final phrase “peccatorum miserere.” Lasso depicts the text through chromaticism, interval inflection (half-steps), cross relations and contrasting textures. Final d.

Alma redemptoris mater, quae pervia caeli porta manes
Et stella maris, succurre cadenti surgere qui curat populo:
Tu quae genuisti, natura mirante, tuum sanctum genitorem:
Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore sumens illud, Ave, peccatorum miserere.
