[1] Alma redemptoris mater

Polyphonic ensemble SAB

S-C4; A-C3; B-F4. Voci pari. Range, A-g’. Using a paraphrased chant (App. 1), A and T are in canon[1] at the unison at the distance of four breves within a continuous texture for each pars. Except for imitative entries for some textual phrases (e.g., “alma” and “tuum sanctum”), the S and B do not include the chant melody. The text, set primarily in melismatic style, concludes with “Amen.” Final a (1.p.) F, b♭ signature (1.p.).

1. Willem Elders suggests that the canon symbolizes the idea of “bringing forth” based upon the text: “Mother of the redeemer…“You…who gave birth to…” Studien zur Symbolik in der Musik der alten Niederländer, (Bilthoven, 1968), 90 and New Josquin Edition, Vol. 23, XI.

[2] Tu que genuisti

Alma redemptoris mater, quae pervia caeli porta manes
Et stella maris, succurre cadenti surgere qui curat populo:
Tu quae genuisti, natura mirante, tuum sanctum genitorem:
Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore sumens illud, Ave, peccatorum miserere.
