Alma redemptoris mater

Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTTB

Two contrasting choirs. Chr. 1: C I-G2; C II-G2; A-C2; T-C3. Range, f-g’’. Chr. II: A-C2; T I-C3; T II-C3; B-F3. Range, B♭-c’’. High clefs. Only the opening word, “alma,” for each choir involves chant (App. 1). Textual phrases are defined by motivic material, texture, mensuration and antiphonal treatment. Textual phrases or specific words (e.g., “succurre”) alternate between respective choirs. A majority of the motet is scored for individual choirs; only twelve mm. of the 84-mm. antiphon involve simultaneous choirs. Except for “tuum sanctum genitorem,” that initiates a section in triple mensuration, textual phrases overlap between choirs. An imitative texture characterizes “alma redemptoris…mater” and the word “surgere”; the remainder of the setting exhibits homorhythmic style. A declamatory text setting prevails. Each choir is harmonically independent. Final F, b♭ signature.

Alma redemptoris mater, quae pervia caeli porta manes
Et stella maris, succurre cadenti surgere qui curat populo:
Tu quae genuisti, natura mirante, tuum sanctum genitorem:
Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore sumens illud, Ave, peccatorum miserere.
