Polyphonic ensemble STX

C-C1; T-C3; Ct-C4. The slightly paraphrased chant (App. 1), transposed a fifth higher, appears in the C in cantilena style and as the only voice for the opening 9 mm. Ct and T are textless for the first and third sections; all voices are texted for “tu quae genuisti…” and “sumens….” Compound duple mensuration is employed for “alma redemptoris mater” and “virgo prius” and triple mensuration for “tu quae genuisti.” “Sumens…miserere” in homorhythmic style has a corona over each pitch.[1] Final C, b♭ signature for T and Ct.

1. For a Schenkerian analysis of Dufay’s setting, see Saul Novack. “Guillaume Dufay: Alma redemptoris mater (II).” Models of Musical Analysis: Music Before 1600. Edited by Mark Everist. Oxford: Basil Blackwell Ltd., 1992.

Alma redemptoris mater, quae pervia caeli porta manes
Et stella maris, succurre cadenti surgere qui curat populo:
Tu quae genuisti, natura mirante, tuum sanctum genitorem:
Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore sumens illud, Ave, peccatorum miserere.
