[1] Alma redemptoris mater

Polyphonic ensemble SATBXX

C-G2; Sx-G2; A-C2; Q-C3; T-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, A-g’’. Two equal C (C & Sx) and T (Q & T) voices. Chant (App. 1) permeates the imitative polyphonic texture with each textual phrase. Initial pitches of chant quotations usually involve breves or semibreves but remainder of phrases includes a variety of rhythmic gestures. Both pars introduce initial motivic material within an additive process (1.p., mm. 1-8 and 2.p., mm. 88-99); there follows considerable text repetition and development of motivic materials to create one of the most substantial settings of the text (200 mm.). A variety of voice groupings contrast with full voice segments (e.g., “quae pervia coeli,” mm. 34-9; “tuum sanctum genitorem,” mm. 122-8; “ac posterius,” mm. 146-51; and the concluding textual segments of each pars: “qui curat populo,” mm. 83-7 and “peccatorum miserere,” mm. 195-99). Final F, b♭ signature.

Alma redemptoris mater, quae pervia caeli porta manes
Et stella maris, succurre cadenti surgere qui curat populo:
Tu quae genuisti, natura mirante, tuum sanctum genitorem:
Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore sumens illud, Ave, peccatorum miserere.
