Alma redemptoris mater

Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTBBXX

Two equal choirs. C-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-F3; Bc-F3. Bc is basically a basso seguente and not essential to the performance of the antiphon. High clefs. Entire range, B♭-g’’. Intonation abbreviated to three initial and three final pitches of “Alma” melisma. Chant (App. 3) permeates the imitative texture associated with “redemptoris mater” (Chr. I), its restatement in Chr. II (mm. 1-12) and “que pervia” (Chr. I, F-G & Chr. II, G-C; mm. 11-8). Textual phrases are differentiated through antiphonal procedures, contrast of mensuration, texture and tonal areas. Rhythmic gestures primarily of minums and semiminums in overlapping statements of choirs characterize “et stella…succure” (mm. 20-29). Triple mensuration commensurate with homorhythmic texture defines “surgere..populo” (mm. 31-9). Full voice texture characterizes “surgere…populo” (mm. 36-9) and final textual phrase, “peccatorum miserere” (mm. 63-6). Each choir is harmonically independent. Final F, b♭ signature.

Et stella maris, succurre cadenti surgere qui curat populo:
