Alma redemptoris mater

Polyphonic ensemble SSATTB

[S I]-G2; [S II]-G2; [A]-C2; [T I]-C3; [T II]-C3; [B]-F3. High clefs. Entire range, B♭-f’’. Chant (App. 1) is only evident for the opening motive of “alma” in all voices except B. A variety of melodic and rhythmic gestures are used to contrast textual phrases; multiple rhythmic gestures are employed simultaneously for some phrases (e.g., “virgo prius ac posterius”). The motet includes triadic melodic motives (“Et stella maris” and “Tu quae genuisti”) within an imitative, contrapuntal texture. Except for a melisma for “quae pervia,” Cavaccio employs a syllabic setting complemented by rhythmic gestures in a style characteristic of the early Baroque. B emphasizes harmonic progressions. Final F, b♭ signature.
