Alma redemptoris mater

Polyphonic ensemble SATBXX

C-G2; Sx-C1; A-C2; T-C3; Q-C3; B-C4. T and Q share similar range (f-g’). High clefs. Entire range, c-f’’. Chant, cast as longa and semibreves, introduces “Alma” (Sx) supported by two related motives (T & B, mm. 1-3); the introductory material is repeated with chant in A and related motives in C and Q (mm. 3-6).[1] Plainsong also concords with the initial pitches of “Tu quae genuisti” (T & B, mm. 25-9). With an emphasis upon vertical and harmonic elements, Asola has created structural clarity in Alma redemptoris mater; textual phrases are differentiated through texture, cadential patterns and contrast of full-voice and reduced voice textures.
