Polyphonic ensemble SSABX

C I-C1; C II-C1; A-C3; B-F4; Bc-F4. The Bc is basically a basso seguente and not essential to the performance of the music. No evidence of chant. Structure is defined by contrasting motivic material, texture and mensuration. Motivic material for textual phrases is usually introduced by imitation (e.g.,“alma...mater,” “et stella…” and “tu…genuisti”). With a dramatic gesture “tu que genuisti” begins with a semibreve, followed by a semiminum rest and three semiminums that acquires intensity through repetition but resolves into a contrasting passage in triple mensuration and homorhythmic style (“natura…genitorem”). Declamatory text setting prevails. Final g, b♭ signature and inclusion of e♭ and f♯ where appropriate.
