Alma redemptoris mater

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-C4. High clefs. Entire range, A-g’’. To emphasize borrowed material, chant (App. 1) appears in longae and semibreves in initial statements of “alma” (A & C, mm. 1-9; B & A, mm. 13-6) within an imitative polyphonic texture; the first four chant pitches (c, d, e, f) associated with “quae pervia” are expanded to an octave (A & C) and an additional two pitches (B), all in semibreves (mm. 21-5). Except for paired imitation that complements “alma redemptoris mater” (mm. 1-10) a full-voice texture with independent voices prevails; a homorhythmic segment concurrent with “tuum sanctum genitorem” contrasts with surrounding material. Third-related harmonies (A/D, m. 33; D/F, m. 51) suggest contrast of color but also of emotion. Syllabic text setting with occasional melismas (e.g., “redemptoris”) characterizes the antiphon. Final F, b♭ signature.

Alma redemptoris mater, quae pervia caeli porta manes
Et stella maris, succurre cadenti surgere qui curat populo:
Tu quae genuisti, natura mirante, tuum sanctum genitorem:
Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore sumens illud, Ave, peccatorum miserere.
