Regina celi

Polyphonic ensemble ATB

A-C4; T-C5 & C4; B-F4. Entire range, E-f’. B, with the range, E-b♭ occasionally crosses above A or T; A and T primarly function within the same range, B♭-f’ with considerable voice crossing. Chant (App. 3) introduces “Regina celi” (A, B, T, mm. 1-7) as semibreves within an imitative, polyphonic texture; the most complete plainsong statement of “quia quem meruisti” appears in T (mm. 23-7) followed by a principal motive of the “portare” melisma (T, mm. 30-3). Although plainsong concurrent with “resurrexit” is limited, notable prominence is accorded “sicut dixit” (T & B, mm. 42-8). Plainsong serves as cantus firmus for “ora pro nobis” (mm. 52-62) and paraphrased chant initiates the final “alleluia” section (mm. 64-108) that constitutes more than a third of the antiphon; the first 14 measures are immediately restated (mm. 64-76 equals 77-89). A characteristic trait of the antiphon entails a series of overlapping 2-4 measure phrases with contrasting voice combinations (e.g., “alleluia,” A/B, mm. 9-11; T/B, mm. 11-4; A, mm. 13-6; A/T/B, mm. 15-8). Final F, b♭ signature.
